SpearTip, LLC CEO Jarrett Kolthoff participated as a speaker and panelist at the recent St. Louis eDiscovery Symposium sponsored by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.
In an October report to Congress, the Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive (ONCIX) outlined the emerging threats to American businesses from industrial and economic espionage carried out by foreign governments and domestic competitors. These “represent significant and growing threats to the nation’s prosperity and security,” according to the report.
“This report confirms what we have been doing from the start when it comes to industrial counterespionage,” says SpearTip CEO Jarrett Kolthoff, himself a former Special Agent – U.S. Army Counterintelligence.
SpearTip, LLC CEO Jarrett Kolthoff recently addressed the Missouri Attorney General’s Electronic Data Privacy Summit, outlining emerging technologies, trends and issues in cyber security and proposing legal changes to enhance protection for competitive business secrets against domestic and foreign cyber espionage.
The day-long Summit was held November 22, 2011, at Washington University Law School, in St. Louis. Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster chaired a panel of chief prosecutors from three metro-St. Louis counties together with several members of the Missouri legislature. The purpose of the summit was to assist the Attorney General in proposing legislation in the upcoming legislative session, to enhance information privacy and cyber security.

“We all know how vulnerable these systems are, the hackers know how vulnerable these systems are, the public does not,” said Jarrett Kolthoff of SpearTip, LLC. His company specialized in web security, though Kolthoff says he has no direct knowledge of the Curran-Gardner water pump failure. Kolthoff added that this highlights the need for utilities to make sure they are using best practices to protect SCADA systems.

A new report from cyber security firm Symantec (SYMC) reveals that 29 chemical companies and “another 19 in various other sectors, primarily the defense sector” were the victims of a two-and-a-half-month cyber espionage campaign.
